6. DESIGN OF A HAIR SALON

Some rules for the design of a beauty salon. Take into consideration the technical, ergonomic and comfort needs of clients and users. Marketing techniques and customer well-being. Arrange the spaces dedicated to the different techniques and choose furniture according to your professional entity (your image), easy maintenance, comfort and ergonomics for users.

The 4 things to remember when designing a beauty salon :

— Define the different areas focusing on the functional aspect. — Describe the expected roles of the defined areas.
— Size the areas according to regulatory requirements.
— Define the comfort standards expected from different spaces.

Interior spaces :

It is important to organize the interior spaces according to, on the one hand, the fluid distribution standards (hydraulic and electrical) and also to imagine the technical activity areas while satisfying the comfort and well- being of the client.

A beauty salon can be divided into 3 zones :

1. Entrance – reception / cash register / waiting room
2. Technical work area – washing – shampoo / haircut / styling 3. Annexes – bathrooms / annex premises

Your profession can be practiced in different spaces. Here is an example of a beauty salon layout.

TECHNICAL LAYOUT

THE ENTRANCE – THE RECEPTION

This area is important and should allow you to place, not far from the entrance, the cash counter to make appointments, and also a place to promote the products for sale.

Place a furniture dedicated to product presentation. It is possible to create other specific spaces for the promotion and sale of products, near the technical areas, for consultations.

A little closer to the main activity area will be the waiting area, which should be comfortable and equipped with sofas and/or armchairs. It should be a welcoming and active space. Cloakroom space for your clients’ personal belongings.

TECHNICAL WORK AREAS

A shampoo station : When designing this space you must have a minimum of 2 specific pieces of furniture, the shampoo chairs and a storage unit for the different washing and care products, as well as towels. Everything you need should be within reach, shampoos, scalp lotions, towels, etc.

The washing / shampoo area, must be well lit to facilitate the stylist’s work: a valid and effective solution is spot lighting.

Laboratory or chemical mixture preparation space, not very large, with a sink and storage cabinets, well ventilated (specific ventilation) and well lit, allowing technical products to be stored and chemical mixtures to be prepared for clients.

HAIRCUT / HAIRSTYLING

This is the “heart” of the salon, the area where the stylist puts his skills at the service of his clients; It is also the space where the client looks in the mirror for a long period of time. Therefore, when designing this area, special attention must be paid to the electrical installation: direct lighting must be avoided, you will prefer a diffuse lighting, which does not create unpleasant shadows.

The area is equipped with at least 3/4 hairdressing chairs and an equal number of mirrors; It is also necessary to provide furniture: fixed to the wall (recommended for small rooms) or on islands (in very large rooms and for a more refined and sophisticated clientele).

In this space, areas can be set up for similar activities such as cosmetologists, make-up artists, manicurists, etc.

BATHROOM

The dimensions of the bathroom depend on the number of people who can be present simultaneously in the salon and the regulations of local authorities. Bathrooms must be accessible from the inside and have a sink.

STORAGE SPACES

To store work tools, products, cleaning materials and personal belongings of employees, complying with various national and local obligations.

THE DESIGN OF A HAIR SALON

Furniture plays a fundamental role, representing the character and style of the owner. It can also direct the type of activity towards a well-defined target. But the attention paid to the client in terms of well- being and comfort should never be neglected.

The furniture elements must be divided according to functional zones. Lighting should be designed to be pleasant and at the same time useful for technical areas.

The temperature should be pleasant and moderate. The sound ambiance, a pleasant background sound.
