The profession of hairdresser offers a wide variety of careers. Once you have obtained your diploma, you will have the opportunity to orient yourself according to your preferences.

 

Multi-skilled hairdresser : This is the most common position in hair beauty salons. If you enjoy all the activities of a hairdresser, being versatile will allow you to vary your work throughout the day.

Specialized stylist : Some salons prefer to hire hairdressers who specialize in certain areas rather than multi-skilled stylists. You can specialize in coloring techniques (coloring, bleaching, balayage, etc.), chemical texture services (permanent waving/hair relaxing), feminine or masculine cutting and styling, among others. During your studies, you will have to study all areas related to hairdressing. Salon manager : The hair salon manager (otherwise known as “Manager”) is an experienced hairdresser who has proven himself in the field. Hair salon owner : To own a hair salon, it is recommended to have first obtained a hairdressing diploma and have a few years of experience. You will need to research your city/state/country’s business start-up requirements to find out what regulations apply to hair salons.

Product Brand Educator : Most product brands are looking for educators, whose goal will be to train hairstylists and salons on how to use and sell their products. These educators will also present new products and trend collections created by the brands. They are of great importance because they will create the link between the brands and the salons, thus allowing the correct use of the products and therefore increasing the sales of the brand as well as those of the beauty salons. For this job, you must enjoy learning, transmitting and above all feel comfortable speaking in front of an audience.

Educator in a hairdressing school : After several years of experience as a hairdresser, and if you think you have a vocation as a teacher, you can apply to a hairdressing school. To do this, you will need to be a person who likes to pass on your knowledge and who demonstrates a lot of patience. Creativity and imagination will also be great assets to get the attention of students year after year.

Artistic director : An artistic director is a very experienced hairdresser who masters all hairstyling techniques. He must have an artistic spirit and unlimited creativity. He will imagine and create future hairstyling trends for brands or salons. He will therefore have an important influence in the world of hairdressing. He will often do shows to present his work.

Head hairdresser for cinema, theater, television, etc. : The artistic world is usually a closed environment in which it will take time to make a name for yourself. However, you can start to make yourself known by assisting a head hairdresser, then by building relationships in the industry. The head hairstylist will be responsible for following the director’s directives in collaboration with the director of photography and the head make-up artist, to create wigs and hairpieces or to create modern or period hairstyles for the actors. Once you have obtained your hairdressing diploma, you can pursue training as a wig and hair pieces maker in order to expand your skills and increase your chances of obtaining a work contract in this field.

Competitions : The world of hairdressing offers several types of competitions, national and international, which will allow you to perfect your skills in specific areas. You will learn to work in an organized, disciplined and methodical way to become a champion. Competitions open many doors in all areas of the professional hairdressing world.
