4. RISK MANAGEMENT AND CLIENT PROTECTION

As a hairdresser or salon owner, minimizing risk is essential to maintaining a safe and healthy environment.

Below are strategies for managing and minimizing risks associated with infection control :

  • Client consultation : Before providing services, always conduct a consultation with your clients to iden- tify any health conditions or possible risks (e.g., skin infections, open wounds, or communicable diseases like lice). This allows you to make informed decisions and potentially reschedule services if necessary.

  • Personal hygiene : Personal hygiene plays a critical role in infection control. Hairdressers must wash their hands thoroughly before and after each client, avoid touching their face, and wear gloves when appro- priate. Staff should be trained in the importance of hand hygiene and use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).

  • Workplace hygiene : Ensure that the salon environment is clean, including workstations, tools, and surfaces. This involves daily cleaning and disinfecting procedures, as well as maintaining proper ventila- tion to reduce airborne pathogens.

  • Training and education : Regular staff training on infection control protocols, proper cleaning methods, and the use of PPE. Staff should be aware of the importance of following the salon’s infection control policies to reduce the risk of cross-contamination and protect both clients and staff.

  • Emergency protocols : Follow salon emergency protocols for handling exposure incidents, such as contact with bloodborne pathogens or chemical spills. Having procedures in place ensures that staff can respond appropriately to emergencies and protect themselves and others from harm.
